In order to make the distinction, some people say 'Chag Sameach' only on the
Shalosh Regalim (three festivals) and say 'Chag Chanukah Sameach' on Chanukah,
etc. to indicate that it's not a Torah-based 'CHAG' but 'Chag Chanukah' or
'Chag Purim'. One of my favorite discussions is to ask a class of kids "How
many days in a 'Chag'?" They usually start with 8, then the fun begins...

So is the song, CHAG PURIM incorrect? And should you only say Chag Sameach on
Passover, Shavuot and Sukkot? (I heard one of the rabbis say it on Tu B'Shevat.)

FYI,
As was mentioned by Meris, "V'samachta B'chagecha" is for the Shalosh
Regalim (Passover, Shavuot, and Sukkot). This goes back to the rabbinic
classification of holy days. The word "chag" is a technical term in that
context. Purim and Chanukah, post-Torah holidays, are considered "minor
holidays," so the term "chag" is not applied to them.
As for Purim, I think that "Rebbe Elimelech" is a great song -- especially
this year when Purim begins after Havdalah.
