I've been doing some research on this myself. Two very basic key points
to consider: how many notes can be played at once? - basic keyboards
may be limited to very basic chords - and how do the keys feel, to play?
- if you want touch-sensitivity, which lets you play with more
expression, this will cost somewhat more. True piano-like keys, as in a
digital piano, are extremely pricey. But the most basic keyboards may
only have the choice of two volumes, "on" or "off". There are more
moderately priced keyboards which give intermediate gradations of sound
within adding too much to the cost.
If you have a friendly local music store that knows you as a musician,
they may be willing to let you take a keyboard home & try it out for a
few days before you decide. The Kingston Guitar Shop let me do this with
my new guitar.
