Rick is correct. The mp3 format is alive and well--for now. Mp3.com, a web
host that distributed mp3 files has been bought out by C-Net, who will
probably now get into the music download game along with Real Rhapsody,
MusicMatch, the new Napster, and Apple iTunes.

However, mp3 and mp3pro may not be the reigning format forever. Keep your
eyes out for files in OGG and FLAC format--both of which are more efficient
than mp3.

Quick clarification...the website MP3.com is going under, not the MP3 
format.  This only affects you if you have music hosted at MP3.com, 
not if you have your music anywhere (or anyone's music for that 
matter) in the MP3 format.
