[HANASHIR:15661] Amateur recording

A question for all of you who have experience with recording...I teach K-3 
Religious School Music.  I know how much the children and parents love to hear 
their voices singing the songs they enjoy so much.  I had a thought that if I 
could chronicle the songs for each grade level over the course of the year, 
then produce a cd for purchase by the families, that it could not only be a 
valuable memory for the families but (of course) a fundraiser as well.  What 
kind of equipment would I need in the classroom to make amateur recordings and 
then have them burned onto a cd?  Is this a feasible idea?
    As you can tell, I have no experience with recording.  I would greatly 
appreciate the thoughts of those who do!
