Last thing, fyi:
from the Reform Judaism Website--
"In Support of the Cantorate"
At its June [2003] board meeting, the CCAR adopted a
resolution that addresses the issue of how the title
cantor is used. Noting that many UAHC congregations
bestow the title of "Cantor" on lay soloists who have
not been invested as cantors, or jointly certified as
cantors by the American Conference of Cantors and the
School of Sacred Music, the resolution urges CCAR
members [i.e. Rabbis] to refrain from using this title
those who are not invested or certified, "however well
versed in music and Judaica they might be." The full
text of the resolution can be found online [at the
ccar website].
