[HANASHIR:14619] 60's Folk Music

When I am solo in concert, I always add a "flashback" section to my
second set - usually, "Jet Plane," "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?,"
"If I Had a Hammer," "Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream" and a few
others. I sing them medley-style - one following another - and it never
fails to excite the crowd. I've just done PLENTY of my Jewish rock/pop
style of music, and this is a nice "respite" from explaining the lyrics,
the liturgy or the meaning behind the music. Songs like these need no
explanation - it's all from the heart. People often sing my music with
me, but they REALLY sing during this mini-set. I do it towards the end,
leaving them with something very familiar. But you have to judge your
audience - a set like this is not for every concert. If it's a bunch of
NFTY or youth group kids, for example, it doesn't speak to them in the
same way as say, "The Time of Your Life" (also in my repertoire) does.
But of course, our job as cantors and songleaders and teachers and choir
directors is to "Teach Your Children" the magic of my generation's
music. And all generations' music. Someday, maybe, those young kids
will get just as excited during the "flashback" set. Aleinu - it's up
to us.

Shalom from the Rockies,
Robbi Sherwin
