Here's another idea for rhythm instruments.  At one of the Jewish
preschools where I teach, we also use secular songs.  For fish or
water-related songs, I made water shakers.  I recycled the short little
water bottles (probably 8 oz.) and filled them about halfway with blue
colored water (food coloring).  For the finishing touch, I got some of
the fish "confetti" table decorations from the party store and put some
in each bottle.  I used masking tape to make sure the tops stay on.
 
The children enjoyed the novelty and the great water sounds when they
shake them.  We sometimes pretend to be underwater!
