[HANASHIR:14446] RE: Fourth of July Shabbat

One thing that jumps out at me right away -- and maybe especially because today
is
Memorial Day -- is "Children Of Freedom", which can be found on the Ruach 5763
CD
and in the Ruach Songbook; both can be purchased from the fine folks at
Transcontinental Music (www.etranscon.com). The song, written by Beth Schafer,
was
recorded "We Are The World" style by Beth and "Friends" -- (in order of
appearance) Rabbi Joe Black, Josh Nelson, Julie Silver, Doug Cotler, Craig
Taubman, Peri Smilow, and Debbie Friedman.

Written in reaction to the events of 9/11, "Children Of Freedom" is a poignant
portrait of how our American and Jewish roots are inextricably intertwined. And
as one the 1500+ members of the "CAJE27 Chorus" -- as were many list members --
that appears at the end of the song, I can honestly say that singing this song
as
part of a group of Jewish Americans (along with Jews from all over the globe) is
an incredibly moving experience. "Children Of Freedom" would be an excellent way
to add an American touch to Shabbat services while keeping them distinctly
Jewish.

Subject: [HANASHIR:14442] Fourth of July Shabbat

The leadership of my Temple has raised the question of whether or not to
incorporate the Fourth of July into the Erev Shabbat service on the Friday
night it occurs. Does anyone have any ideas for a way of keeping the
evening distinctly Jewish, and at the same time, recognizing the Fourth of
July?

Thank you.
