[HANASHIR:14293] Please DO NOT forward to everyone

Chaverim:

Please do not forward such messages to the hanashir list. There are plenty
of other Jewish lists around whose discussion topics are more appropriate
for the dissemination of such material. This just doesn't fit in with
hanashir's mission. This message, btw, is already quite old, and has been
circulating on the internet for three months now. It is quickly reaching the
level of spam. (Spam can be true--to be spam, it merely needs to be
unsolicited and off-topic.) The original NY Times article appeared back in
March and has now seen several waves of internet dissemination.

I am aware of this matter of Hutton Gibson, and Mel's new film of the
passion, and have expressed my concerns over this issue on other lists where
it is more appropriately a topic.

I trust you understand that while a subject may be of Jewish interest, that
doesn't automatically make it a subject of interest to hanashir. The recent
reference to an article about Joel Sussman's song "Soldier of Conscience" is
an example of something from the news that would be related.(On that
subject, I have solicited a response and have already heard from Cantor
Solomon of Safam, who is asking Joel Sussman, who wrote the song, to respond
for us.)

I will use my bully pulpit as list owner to add a final thought on this
matter. Protesting the anti-Semitic tone of the upcoming movie is
appropriate. As artists, I think we might all agree that boycotting all of
an artist's work just because they are involved in one project which is
offensive or inappropriate paints with a very broad brush. Consider the
recent article about Joel Sussman's "Soldier of Conscience." The author
expressed disappointment in the sentiment, but didn't say not to buy any of
Safam's recordings. Do we boycott Shakespeare because some might find
"Merchant of Venice" anti-Semitic (although some scholars argue it is just
the opposite) ?

And with that, this thread on Hutton Gibson, Mel Gibson, and his new passion
play film will come to an end on this list. You may continue the discussion
off list as you desire. The great and powerful Oz has spoken.
