I must concur with Eric. Using an inexpensive microphone with a digital
recorder sort of defeats the purpose. I have used a Sony one-point stereo
microphone, an ECM 717, for years now (first purchased for use with my MD
recorder at Hava Nashira about five years ago.)
Just for the record, I wouldn't buy any serious consumer or professional
audio product from Radio Shack. With rare exception, all their products are
made by other companies, and are basically scaled-back, cheaply-made
versions of what those companies sell under their own labels.
Looking for a good source to buy audio equipment? Try Full Compass Systems,
http://www.fullcompass.com . In the over two decades I have done business
with them, they have grown to become one of America's largest audio dealers.
And they are located in Madison, WI, just a short drive from Oconomowoc. The
owners are Jewish and active in their synagogue. I have nothing to gain from
this endorsement except to connect even more of you with a really good
company.

the problem with having a mini-disc recorder is its
blessing as well: the recording quality is excellent.
as a result, you really should plop down the $80-$120
it's going to cost you for a decent microphone.
anything less will greatly compromise the recording
quality... and it's an investment. i have the sony
stereo microphone. it's about 5" long and 1" wide (and
soft as a downy chick). don't skimp when it comes to
the microphone. trust me.
