Hi Fran,
I've heard it done and as a matter of fact, when we chant the
Avot/G'vurot my accompanist will sometimes play chords under the words
and it sounds nice. The chords I use are as follows:
C Em Dm G
C
Ba-ruch A-tah A-do-nai E-lo-hei-nu Ve-lo-hei A-vo-tei-nu
Dm C G
C
E-lo-hei Av-ra-ham E-lo-hei Yitz-chak Vei-lo-hei Ya-a-kov, etc. Just
improvise in a major key. Hope that helps,
