[HANASHIR:13683] Re: Avot/Gevurot

Hi Fran,

Interesting. The temple I grew up in was very classical reform. Everything was
accopanied by organ, including Avot. I wouldn't consider it inappropriate, but
simply not common practice. The Avot is not actually a *chant*, but a
classical-style melody composed a while back by Adolph Katchko. The Gevurot is
also just a traditional melody. (Any Jewish musicologists or historians please
correct me or elaborate).

If you were to play the chords (which might be in Gates of Song???), I would
suggest long ringing out strums or even finger picking, rather than the
rhythmic up-tempo NFTY-style strumming. Good luck.

  Hi all,

I'm going to be leading music for a congregation that has asked if I could
possibly play music under the chanting of the Avot and Gevurot. I've never
seen any chords or heard that done before. I may be wrong, but it seems
inappropriate to "accompany" the chanting of those two prayers.

  Thanks,
  Fran
