Two possibilities:

Back in 1974, we wrote a counter melody for Lo Alecha based on the
neighboring verse in Pirkei Avot: "Hayom kaztar v'hamlacha m'ruba..." But
the second melody never worked well for me, melodically it was just not
happening, and it repeats "Uva'al habayit docheik" four times; it got kind
of boring to sing. So we dropped it. I think you can here it on the
original NFTY recording (just released on CD as you've heard).

Meanwhile, kids from either USY or NCSY started singing Moti Giladi's 1970s
hit "Sheyibaneh beit hamikdash' along with Lo Alecha. It's not exactly a
round, as I've heard it,. Anyway, in certain quarters it just stuck and
that's become their 'tradition'.
