The competition in Europe is called EUROVISION. There are representatives
from many European countries - music groups, who have won competitions in
their own country and who represent that country when they come to the
Eurovison contest. It's formatted more like a beauty pageant. The winner of
the contest achieves fame and recognition. The "home" country must host the
competition the following year. Israel won a number of times with songs
such as: Abanibi, Hora, Halleluyah and Hoopa Hula. These winning songs
become sort of like National Anthems for the year because of the pride of
having won this European Contest.

In Israel there are also national song festivals - for children's and pop
music. It is a way of getting recognition both for the songwriters and the
group performing the song.
