Eurovision is a song competition between countries.
Each country sends in a representative song that is
performed, then voted on. Like the Olympics, it isn't
totally protected from politicization. Israel was
represented over the years by, among others, Ofra Haza
z"l, Avi Toledano, Rita (Shara Bar'chovot), Moshe and
Orna Datz, Yardena Arazi, Dana International as you
mentioned, Yizhar Cohen, Shokolad Menta Mastik.
Israel's winning or placing songs have included
Aba-nibi-ob-hebev, Halleluyah, Chai, Ani Od Kan, I
think. Up until I left in 1997, almost every year the
process of choosing the songs in Israel was changed
for unexplicable reasons (to me), in an attempt to
beat out the other countries, ie. send music that
would appeal to the European continent. In other
words, there too the process became more and more
commercial, market - driven, and political. Sigh.
