[HANASHIR:13575] Ki Tisa -- Sermon In Song

Chevrei --

This past August at CAJE, I had the privilege of taking a workshop about
writing a D'var Torah with
Rabbi Joe Black. Two months ago Joe was at the one of the three synagogue I
teach at for Friday
evening Shabbat Services, where he did a 'sermon-in-song'. Both were great
experiences -- not only
for Joe's music itself, but also for the way his sermon related to his music
(and vice versa).

The reason I mention this is that I was asked by my Rabbi to give the D'var
Torah this Friday
evening while he is in sunny Florida at a Wexner Fellows Weekend. Immediately
I thought to do a
'sermon-in-song'. While I would love to write a song related to this week's
parsha -- Ki Tisa -- it
probably would not be finished in time. A more likely possibility would be to
base my D'var Torah
on a song that has already been written.

One song that immediately comes to mind is a personal favorite, Leon Sher's
"Adonai Adonai" (Exodus
34:6-7). "V'shamru" (Exodus 31:16-17) also comes from this parsha, but because
it is already a part
of the Shabbat liturgy, perhaps it might seem redundant to do it a second time
-- even if two
different versions are done.

Do any of you have any other suggestions for songs? If you have a suggestion,
please let me know
how you think it relates to the text (if it is a creative interpretation) or
how you would interpret
the text used (if it is just Hebrew). I would especially be honored if any of
you had songs related
to or from Ki Tisa. I am looking forward to your input.

Still digging out from near-blizzard conditions and record snowfall in central
Massachusetts (some
of us aren't as lucky as Joe) . . . can't wait for Purim in Miami!
