I have a 5 year old. He can hold a guitar and strum it, but he couldn;t chord 
it. I still think it;'s great for him to get used to holding it, making 
noise, singing his heart out to no recognizable harmony. With my older ones, 
when they got to an age where they could begin to do something with the left 
hand (8) I  gave them a guitar tuned to an open "G". This gave them the 
abililty to make a beautiful sound without any work and to start learning how 
to fret a string at a time to play some melodies. The satisfaction of making 
nice music encouraged them while building some skills that lead to chords in 
a standard tuning.
