Start with piano to give the kid a general knowledge of music, chords, etc.

I began piano in kindergarten.  Then I added flute in 2nd grade,  guitar in 
6th grade and saxophone in 7th grade.  My general knowledge of piano enabled 
me to be succesful in all other areas of music and instruments, trained my 
ear, taught me to read music, and really made a large difference in my guitar 
abilities.

If he really shines at piano and has 'songleading blood', then he can pick up 
guitar ina  few years!
