There were always 9 verses, just not in some prayer books.  It's pretty much 
up to you and minhag hamakom (the custom of the place) to decide.  I've been 
places where they did 1289, 1239, and 1259 as well as all 9 (yes, it takes a 
while).  I'd say the bare minimum (say, tot shabbat) is 1 and 9 (shamor 
v'zachor and then people stand up for boi).
