I like to use my real nails for their natural sound and controllability.
On occasion (esp. when I want extra volume) I use a Herco thumbpick. The
pick part is huge and works as a flatpick as needed.
Some folks I've talked to love their Alaska picks, which fit under short
real nails in the position of a real nail (not "backwards" like most
finger-picks). They've come off mid-song a few times too often for me, but
I'm told that was operator error.
