I am guessing that Karen Gall is based in Quebec, as I
am. Until just a few years ago, we had public school
boards based on religion. There were two systems: the
Catholic system, and the Protestant system. Jews who
attended public schools were automatically enrolled
within the Protestant system. This system had been
around for a hundred years or so. In certain areas of
Montreal, 99% of the students at Protestant schools
were Jewish, as were many of their teachers. Religious
instruction was included within both boards, although
individual students could request exemption from such
classes by taking an alternative such as morals or
philosophy. This system has now been scrapped, in
favor of language-based boards. You now attend school
within the French school system or the English system,
which have essentially replaced the Catholic and
Protestant boards respectively. And it is now possible
to sing Chanukah songs in a public school.
