I personally work for a Jewish Day Camp in Rochester, NY. (I know
Lakeland...have friends who go there..fun place!) Anyway, I was actually
hired from within, ie: I was a camp counselor and lifeguard there for the
past two years, as well as a CIT before that. So that's how I got the job.
The past few music specialists have gotten positions in the same way,
however...I know that camps are always looking for music specialists. It's
apparently the hardest position to fill, because it requires such a
specialized skill. I would think that art or athletics or something would
as well, but I guess those are positions which you could pick up the skills
easier, or through program books/guides...it's a little bit more difficult
to just "pick up" music! First of all, ask people you know in various areas
what camps are around there, and then call them individually. Another
possibility would be to contact national UJC, as they fund a lot of the
Jewish camps, they might be able to help you out. Try contacting the
American Camping Association for a list of registered camps in your
geographic area, or maybe even national USCJ (Conservative) or UAHC (Reform
- did I get the acronym right?)
And good luck! As the music specialist I have a few jobs. But I work at a
day camp. I run all of the music specialties, ie: I see every group of
campers once a week for "music" special. I also help to plan the all-camp
Friday programs, I run Shabbat services/songs, and I lead flagpole every
morning with Ma Tovu and the pledge. Every camp is diffent though, so when
you apply for a job, ask what it entails (obviously!). I know that
overnight camps are a little different, at least the ones I went to, because
there are many more campfires (I go to the overnights/late-nights to help
out with the campfires, but there aren't a lot of those), there's a dining
hall, the kids are older...totally different setting. So ask, and have fun!
Good luck with your search! I LOVE working outside in the summer, with
kids, with music. It's ideal...at least for me!
~smile always~

(P.S. If you ever want to chat about "camp" music, which is a little
different from Hebrew School/Jewish Day School music (I find), e-mail me
privately and we'll chat!)
