A favorite in our preschool is Rabbi Billy' Dreskin's "Are you ready for
Shabbat"
It goes TTTO "Friar Jaques" as an echo song
Are you ready (yes we're ready)
For Shabbat (for Shabbat)
Did you light the candles? (NO)
[SPOKEN]> We didn't light the candles? Let's all light our candles!
[Pantomime candle lighting]
{Say or sing Bracha]
Are you ready (yes we're ready)
For Shabbat (for Shabbat)
Did you light the candles? (Yes we lit the candles)
Did you say the Kiddush? (NO)
[SPOKEN]> We didn't say the Kiddish? Let's all say the Kiddish!
[Pantomime holding the Kiddush cup]
{Say or sing Bracha]
Are you ready (yes we're ready)
For Shabbat (for Shabbat)
Did you light the candles? (Yes we lit the candles)
Did you say the Kiddush? (Yes we said the Kiddish)
Did you say HaMotzi? (NO)
[SPOKEN]> We didn't say HaMotzi? Let's all say the HaMotzih!
[Hold 2 fists next to each other to represent the 2 Challahs]
{Say or sing Bracha]
Are you ready (yes we're ready)
For Shabbat (for Shabbat)
Did you light the candles? (Yes we lit the candles)
Did you say the Kiddush? (Yes we said the Kiddish)
Did you say HaMotzi? (Yes we said Hamotzi)
For Shabbat (for Shabbat).
The old Yiddish standby "Az der Rebbi" can be adapted to "As the Rabbi" with
the Shabbat symbols:
As the rabbi lights (echo)
So do all of the children (echo)
Light, light, light, light, light (pantomime lighting the candles while you
sing this)
Light, light, light, light, light
So do all of the children
Light, light, light, light, light (pantomime lighting the candles while you
sing this)
Light, light, light, light, light
So do all of the children
As the rabbi trink (echo)
So do all of the children (echo)
Trink, trink, trink, trink, trink(pantomime drinking Kiddish while you sing
this)
Trink, trink, trink, trink, trink(
So do all of the children
Trink, trink, trink, trink, trink(pantomime drinking Kiddish while you sing
this)
Trink, trink, trink, trink, trink(
So do all of the children
As the rabbi eats (echo)
So do all of the children (echo)
Challah yum, yum, yum (pantomime eating challah while you sing this)
Challah yum yum yum yum
So do all of the children
Challah yum, yum, yum
Challah yum yum yum yum
So do all of the children
I sometimes also add verses for singing & dancing (la, la, la la la) and end
with sleeping or shlufing (make snoring noises). Ending with sleeping
usually leaves you with a VERY quiet little congregation!
Another popular participation song in our preschool is an adaptation of
Debbie Friedman's "What are the Things we need for our Seder Table" where we
substitue 2 candlesticks (hold 2 pointer fingers up), a Kiddish cup (hold
hand up like Kiddush cup) and 2 challot (hold 2 fists next to each other). I
especially like this one for your special service since the chourus is "But,
the people 'round the table are what we need the most!"
Hope this is helpful!
