I happen to know what vacation bible school is, but I didn't 5 years ago. How
many of us out there know that term? I grew up with Rise and Shine at Jewish
summer camp. I always thought it was a Jewish song. I only recently learned
that it was also used in church youth group settings. But, what's the
problem? We share the same stories as a foundation of our faiths. And, unless
I misread the comment about "Lord" referring to Jesus, what does that have to
do with this song? Noah predates Jesus. I don't think anyone could
misinterpret this song as song to teach Jewish kids about Jesus.
You know, I always thought "Let My People Go" was a Jewish song, too. I grew
up with it at the seder. But it's an African-American Spiritual. And you know
that song that goes "Hallelu, Hallelu, Hallelu, Halleluya! Hodu L'shem?" We
sang it every shabbat at camp. But this past summer I heard it at a
Presbyterian camp.
Yes, we should preserve and keep our faith. We should teach our children
diligently. We need to teach Jewish kids about being Jewish. But we, as
adults, should understand how much we share, especially musically.
Sorry if I've ranted about some part of the conversation I missed or misread.
BTW, I have a Noah song on my CD "Hallelujah Land." It's called "Standing at
the Bottom of Ararat," and as the last line of the last verse states: We're
all on that ark.
