[HANASHIR:11951] Re: Cantorial requirements

Hello Amy,

Since you are located in a city with great Jewish resources, I'll first
point you to the Spertus Institute on the south side of downtown (on S.
Michigan Ave, but not as far as the museum campus I believe). I seem to
remember from when I lived in Chicago that they offered courses of all sorts
which may be good preparation.

If you would prefer online courses or just want to see another option, I
would point you to Hebrew College Online (www.hebrewcollege.edu/online/). I
happened to be a bit biased as I am employed by Hebrew College, work with
the online program, and am a student here myself. However, the online
program offers some Hebrew instruction as well as the ability to attain an
MA in Jewish Studies.

If you need to learn any trope (chanting), the UAHC has recently published
two workbooks for learning to chant Torah and Haftarah. I think they are
called "The Art of Cantillation". If you would like to learn the Reform
method of chanting, I would recommend finding these books because they are
easy-to-use and quite effective.

Also, I would recommend that you to contact whichever cantorial school you
want to end up at (HUC, JTS, UJ, etc.) in order to talk with the admissions
people to see what you really need and to see which school fits you best.
Finally, I think that finding a cantor with whom you can study and bounce
ideas off of is a fantastic idea!

One more thing -- if you would like some clergy contacts, please contact me
privately.

Good luck,
Jennifer
