Hello hanashir folks! This is Angela Gold writing...
I just wanted to share some cool news with everyone. At Hava Nashira '02,
many of you found out that my job at Temple Sinai in Denver was coming to an
end because the temple had finally found the ordained cantor they'd been
looking for to fill the job. I felt lots of support from so many people --
many said they'd keep an eye out for a new job for me, others said to keep in
touch and let them know when I found something.
Well, I am pleased to say that I have found something. In fact, I have many
of you to thank, because I might not have had a chance to accept this
position had it not been for your encouragement... During Hava Nashira, one
day at lunch, Jerry Kaye made an announcement regarding a cantorial soloist
position in Hong Kong. I had seen the posting about it on this very list
just 2 weeks earlier. I remembered reading it and thinking "that sounds like
something interesting for someone ELSE to do..." Well, after Jerry made the
announcement, a lot of people looked at me and said "hel-LOOOOO!!!!!!!!! DO
IT!!!" By the end of HN, I had all kinds of people saying "Write me a
postcard from Hong Kong!" "Have a great adventure overseas!" "You are going
to get that job in Hong Kong!" ... I figured that such a significant number
of supportive songleaders couldn't possibly steer me in the wrong direction,
so I said "alright, alright, I will check into it when I get home."
A few days after I returned to Denver, I contacted some people from the
congregation in Hong Kong by email. This was the beginning of the whirlwind
which, after about 3 weeks, resulted in a job offer! I just thought that you
all might be interested in knowing about the positive outcome of your support
and encouragement (songleaders, unite!!!). So, thank you. I will be
starting my new job 3 weeks from tomorrow. I am excited, and a little
overwhelmed, since I have never been halfway around the world (and there's a
lot of packing and other preparations to be done!! Anybody need a cell phone
plan??? They don't have Verizon in Hong Kong)... I know that, once things
get squared away, this will be an exciting adventure. And please, if any of
you ever plan a trip to the Orient, let me know!!! I should still be able to
check this email address there.
I hope you are all well, and perhaps I will see many of you at CAJE!?!?! (by
the way, I am coming to San Antonio a day early (saturday) and still trying
to figure out where I am staying on that night. Please email me privately if
you are in the same situation and might be able to split a hotel fee...)
Take Care,
Angela Gold
