Chaverim:
I just updated the welcome file that gets sent to new subscribers, and I
thought it couldn't hurt to share this basic list info with everyone.

Hanashir Welcome File
Welcome to the Hava Nashira-Jewish Songleaders (hanashir) discussion
list. It is an open, un-moderated list, relying on subscriber discretion
to keep discussions germane and appropriate. The list does limit the
total number of messages that can be posted on a daily basis.
WHAT THIS LIST IS ABOUT
This open, un-moderated list is for discussion of issues related to
Jewish songleading and Jewish music education. The primary purpose is to
serve as an online resource for all people involved in teaching and
leading Jewish music, whether at camps, congregations, or community
centers. It is associated with the Hava Nashira/Jewish Songleaders web
site located on Shamash at
http://www.ehavanashira.org
The list is for discussion and information sharing. We ask that you
please keep the focus on our subject topic, and the message content
relevant and useful to list members.
This list is open to all persons interested in Jewish Music songleading,
in a variety of settings from camps to cantorial, and in and Jewish
music education. There are no denominational boundaries here. We ask
that all list members be respectful towards the beliefs and practices of
all other list members.
When using transliterated Hebrew or Yiddish words on this list, please
provide an English translation or approximation so that all readers will
be able to understand your message.
Archives of previous messages to the list are available via the web, by

---------------------------
The following are some basic instructions regarding the list
1. TO SEND A MESSAGE TO THE LIST
simply send a message to:
hanashir (at) shamash(dot)org
2. TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS LIST
send the message "unsubscribe hanashir" (without the quotes) to:
listproc (at) shamash(dot)org
3. TO (RE)SUBSCRIBE TO HANASHIR
send "subscribe hanashir [yourName]" (without the quotes)
It is recommended that you not include extraneous information and
override automatic e-mail signature features when sending messages to
the list processor.
4. IF YOU THINK YOU ARE GETTING TOO MUCH MAIL
Every time anyone sends a message, you, a subscriber, will get it. For
some people, this is too much mail. There is a way to avoid this
however, by setting your subscription up as a digest. What this will do
is combine all the messages into one long message, with a table of
contents, which will be sent out at midnight every day. That way, you
will only get one message from the Hanashir list per day. You can set
your subscription up this way at any time by sending a message to
listproc (at) shamash(dot)org, with the following
message:
set hanashir mail digest
If you want to turn off your digest, you can reset it with
set hanashir mail
5. You received a password with your signup. Save it (and this message
for future use. If you ever need to change you subscription address, you
can send the following command to
listproc (at) shamash(dot)org:
set hanashir address <password> <new address>
The deafult password for all subscribers is: hanashir
6. If you have a problem sending messages to the list because your
system uses multiple mail servers, or you need to be able to send mail
from more than one address, please let the list- owner know, because
there are methods of dealing with this.
7. This list recognizes and respects copyrights. We ask that all
subscribers do the same. In addition, we ask that proper attributions to
composers, lyricists and sources, when known be used. If you publish
your own work on the list, we strongly recommend you add a copyright
notice to it.
8. We recognize that artists need to make a living, and the list will
permit announcements of new recordings, books, concerts when phrased in
an appropriate manner. Blatant commercialism will not be tolerated.
9. This list defaults to "reply-to-list", that is, when you hit reply,
your reply goes to the list itself. If you wish to direct your reply to
an individual (and we encourage you to do this when the reply is not
relevant for the entire list to read) then you must manually change the
to: address in the reply. This is the most common problem. It is a good
rule of thumb to always check the "to:" field of any email before you
send it, to make sure it is going where you want it to go.
