  _____

1. How can I find out what mailing lists are on the Shamash system?
How can I find out the exact name of a mailing list on the Shamash
system?

Option One: In order to subscribe to any list on the Shamash
system, you will need to know the name of the list. Valid list names can
be obtained by sending a message to listproc (at) shamash(dot)org which says, on
a line by itself:
lists
You will receive by return e-mail a list of all discussion lists on the
Shamash system, with a short description of each lists's topic and/or
intended audience.

Option Two:Go to http://shamash.org/listform.html to see a list
of the lists we currently support, or to
http://shamash.org/help/listoflists.html to see the archives of some
lists.

2. How do I subscribe to a Shamash ListProc list?

Option One: To subscribe to a list, once you know its name, send
e-mail to listproc (at) shamash(dot)org and have the message (not the subject)
read:
subscribe LISTNAME YOURFIRSTNAME YOURLASTNAME
(Replace LISTNAME with the name of the list to which you want to
subscribe.
Replace YOURFIRSTNAME YOURLASTNAME with your complete name.)

Option Two:Go to http://shamash.org/listform.html and fill out
the form to join a list.

3. How do I unsubscribe from a ListProc list?

From the e-mail address you subscribed to the list, send e-mail
to listproc (at) shamash(dot)org and have the message (not the subject) read:
unsubscribe LISTNAME
(Replace LISTNAME with the name of the list from which you want to
unsubscribe.)

You do not need to include your e-mail address since this is
taken from the message you send. You must send this request from the
account that is subscribed to the list. If you want to unsubscribe from
more than one list, you can include several lines in the above format in
a single message.

I now have a different e-mail address. How can I cancel my
subscription from my former account?

Option One: Fill out the form at
http://shamash.org/listform.html <http://shamash.org/listform.html>
where you can say you want to unsubscribe from a list. When it asks for
your e-mail address, type in you old e-mail address.
Option Two: Send e-mail to LISTNAME-request (at) shamash(dot)org (Replace
LISTNAME with the name of the list from which you want to unsubscribe.)
In the message explain the situation. Be certain to include both the old
and the new e-mail addresses. A human will respond to you directly.

4. I'm interested in some "Jewish Geography". How can I see the
names of people on a particular mailing list?

To get the list of members of a particular Shamash mailing list,
send e-mail to listproc (at) shamash(dot)org and have the message (not the
subject) read:
review LISTNAME
(Replace LISTNAME with the name of the list in which you are
interested.)
You do not need to include your e-mail address since this is taken from
the message you send. For some lists, you must send this request from an
account that is subscribed to the list. If you want to see subscribers
of more than one list, you can include several lines in the above format
in a single message.

However, only the list owners can use this command on almost all
Shamash lists, even subscribers are restricted from reviewing a list of
subscribers.

5. I am getting too much mail from this list; can I receive the
mail in one large composite message which contains all the list messages
from that day? How?

Send e-mail to listproc (at) shamash(dot)org and have the message (not
the subject) read:
set LISTNAME mail digest-nomime (Replace LISTNAME with the name of the
list.)

If you change your mind and want to receive individual messages from the
list again, send this message:
set LISTNAME mail ack

6. I tried to set my mail to digest mode, but all I get is a blank
message. What is wrong?

There have been some problems with certain mail clients reading
digests mailed by ListProc. The digests themselves are actually reaching
you, but are not being processed by your mailer. To fix the problem,
send the following message to listproc (at) shamash(dot)org and have the message
(not the subject) read:
set LISTNAME mail DIGEST-NOMIME
(Replace LISTNAME with the name of the list.)

7. I am going on vacation; how can I temporarily stop getting mail
from a ListProc list?

Send e-mail to listproc (at) shamash(dot)org and have the message (not
the subject) read:
set LISTNAME mail postpone
(Replace LISTNAME with the name of the list.) Please note that this
option is called 'postpone' but you are not actually postponing
messages; you are temporarily stopping mail from the list, and will
never receive the mail you missed while your subscription was set to
'postpone'.

When you return from vacation, send a message like this to
listproc (at) shamash(dot)org(dot)
If you want to receive individual messages from the list:
set LISTNAME mail ack
If you want to read the list in digest mode:
set LISTNAME mail digest-nomime

8. How can I search the list archives? I remember something sent to
a list several months ago which I want to read.

Send the following message to listproc (at) shamash(dot)org and have the
message (not the subject) read:
search LISTNAME SEARCH-TERM
(Replace LISTNAME with the list's name, and SEARCH-TERM with the words
for which you'd like to search.)
Listproc will reply with a list of the files from that list archive
which contain your SEARCH-TERM, with a little bit of context for each
occurence of the term.

9. How can I find a list of archived file names for a particular
list?

Send the following message to listproc (at) shamash(dot)org and have the
message (not the subject) read:
index LISTNAME
(Replace LISTNAME with the list's name.)
Listproc will reply with a list of the files from that list archive.

10. How can I request an archived message?

First, you must know the name of the file you are requesting. To
do find this, do a search
<http://shamash.org/help/LPuser-faq.shtml#search> of the list archives
or get an index <http://shamash.org/help/LPuser-faq.shtml#index> of the
files in the archive. Once you know the name of the file you want to
request, send the following message to listproc (at) shamash(dot)org and have
the
message (not the subject) read:
get LISTNAME FILENAME
(Replace LISTNAME with the list's name. The FILEWhere can I send a
message announcing a new Jewish web site or mailing list?NAME is the
file you want to obtain, which usually has either a month and year as
part of its name, or a volume and number.)

11. Where can I send a message announcing a new Jewish web site or
mailing list?

We encourage you to announce your new web site or mailing list
on the Jewish-announce (at) shamash(dot)org list, a list which has many people
on
it and many Jewish listowners who may choose to pass along your
announcement to their mailing lists.

I urge you to join the list yourself, by emailing
listproc (at) shamash(dot)org and having your message read:

        subscribe jewish-announce YOURFIRSTNAME YOURLASTNAME

(replace YOURFIRSTNAME YOURLASTNAME with your full name)

You will be asked to confirm, then you will be added to the
list. Only one message is sent out a day (which is a composite of other
messages messages) so traffic is very low.

To send your announcement to the list, email
Jewish-announce (at) shamash(dot)org Whatever you type in your email will be
sent
to the list moderator for approval.

12. How can I change my address on a list?

There is a fancy way to do this, if you have your list password,
but we'll explain the easy way instead. The easiest way to change your
address on a Shamash ListProc mailing list is to unsubscribe from the
OLD email address (the one that is subscribed to the mailing list) and
then to resubscribe from your NEW address.

1. First, send an email from your OLD address to
listproc (at) shamash(dot)org with a message saying:

        unsubscribe listname

(Replace "listname" with the actual name of the list.) ** See
below if you cannot send email from your OLD address. **
2. Then, you should resubscribe to the list by sending an email
from your NEW address to listproc (at) shamash(dot)org again with a message
saying:

        subscribe listname firstname lastname

(Replace "listname" with the name of the list, and "firstname
lastname" with your full name.)

** If you cannot complete step #1 as described above, because
you no longer have access to that email account, you can ask the list
owner to remove you from the list at your old address by contacting the
list owner at listname-request (at) shamash(dot)org (Replace "listname" with the
name of the list, so if a list is called "mylist (at) shamash(dot)org", you
would
reach the listowner at mylist-request (at) shamash(dot)org(dot))
