People do realize that you're not the regular Cantor so I think they're 
forgiving if you sing a few notes here or there differently. They might even 
enjoy a different tune for some prayers (especially for silent meditation 
where they don't sing along). I do agree that to try to do at least some of 
the tunes they know is good - even if they are slightly different. I wouldn't 
go crazy trying to do all of their notes perfectly - just to basically follow 
their minhag. Who knows, they might even like YOU better than the REGULAR 
CANTOR...it's happened...
