At our temple the Bar/Bat Mitzvah selects the opening and closing songs
(there is a suggested list), and picks the melodies used for three or four
of the prayers (Oseh Shalom, Mi Chamocha, one or two others).  If the family
has a particular song they want included as the solo, that is accommodated.
On occasion I've been asked to include a particular melody on Friday night
because it's a favorite of the family, but that's more the exception.
