Jennifer and Hebrew grammarians,

I believe "virushalayim" does not begin with a vet (meaning 'in') but a vav
(meaning 'and'). Note the context: Eretz Tziyon VIrushalayim 'the land of
Zion AND Jerusalem. Thus, whoever has "b'Y'rushalayim" here is evidently
mistaking the vav for a bet/vet.

To say 'in Jerusalem', I imagine it would be "BIrushalayim" - with the sheva
being replaced by the chirik by means of the same phonological rule
resulting in "VIrushalayim" above, i.e., the juxtaposition of two
"semi-vowel" shevaim word-initially gives you the full vowel chirik.

(I have a Master's degree in linguistics, so I hope my analysis is correct!)
