True ACUM is indeed a nightmare - they don't respond in time - or ever. Ask 
Velvel for his horror stories. I usually try to contact the authors or 
composers directly. People are usually very generous if it is non-profit or 
educational,and all of the colleagues who have recorded songs of mine are 
wonderful about getting in touch!  Randee Friedman is also very professional 
and great to talk with about permissions.
I do believe that we will still need distributors because there always will 
be a market in real space- real time-real peopledom.
