I am also a tutor, though I have yet to try the
wonderful methods suggested here from Jeff Klepper's
Evanston classes. In the meantime, with your time
constraints, one simple method I find works very well
with average kids as well as the more advanced, is to
pencil lines into their study guides between the trope
clauses, usually phrases that are from 2-5 words. This
really helps them focus using smaller tasks and goals.
Then I teach them using an old tried and true musical
method - repetition of small phrases and clauses that
are then strung together with the neighboring clauses.
Sometimes, for fun and variety, we work the phrases of
a line, then a whole aliyah backwrads. And I have them
repeat the seams between the clauses alot, because
that is where the problems usually occur.
I'm enjoying learning myself from the responses to
your question.
