Chevre-
At our temple, after the rabbi gives his/her sermon, the cantor sings a song 
or prayer that reinforces what the rabbi just spoke about. It gives the 
congregation a few minutes to digest and think about (and sometimes murmur 
about!) what the rabbi just said and sometimes expands upon the subject. It 
can be in Hebrew or English - sometimes even secular. I actually prefer to 
uses pieces that are in both Hebrew and English, like many of Rachelle 
Nelson's, Debbie Friedman's, Craig Taubman's, etc.
