Check out their web site: www.columbiafestival.com
June 15 - 30, 2001
The Columbia Festival of the Arts 2001 Season features more than 200 artists
from eleven countries, including the U.S. debut of Israel's Haifa Festival
Orchestra and Cuba's Lizt Alfonso Dance Cuba and Traje Nuevo,
U.S. premieres by Israel's Inbal Pinto and Canada's Les Deux Mondes, and a
sneak preview of Washington Ballet's new collaboration with Sweet Honey in
the Rock.
The festival kicks off with its second annual fund raising gala featuring Tom
Wopat, star of Broadway's "Annie Get Your Gun" and TV's "Dukes of Hazzard,"
and a spectacular community event, "Lighting up the Lakefront." Free concerts
at the Lakefront include Reggae greats Third World, Afro-Pop's Toure Toure,
Cuba's Bambaleo, and swing favorites the Chenille Sisters and the James
Dapogny's Chicago Jazz Band.
And there's more. Riverdance favorite Eileen Ivers, the Twyla Tharp Dance
Company, jazz great Dee Dee Bridgewater, and from Brazil, for the festival
finale, Afro-Brazilian group Olodum.

U.S. Premiere
Inbal Pinto "Oyster"
"...She is a breath of fresh air. Her universe is elfin and sparkling,
studded with humour."
- Lyon Figaro
"...The audience watched with their breath taken away until the last frantic
break of applause."
- Thessalia Volou
Like the verses of a nursery rhyme, "Oyster" unveils its magical scenes to
create a quirky fairytale landscape. From the seemingly limitless imagination
of Israeli choreographer Inbal Pinto and director Avshalom Pollak, this
mysterious dance theater piece resonates with fantastical images of a wacky,
surreal circus both light and dark in color. "Oyster" will move and captivate
the entire family.
