Wait.......hear that? That's....silence. Silence from the list. What a
change of pace. No one out there with van information? Darn!
Actually, I'm teasing and look forward to some other dialog with the non-
HNers here. Myself, I'm headed to the Kerrville Folk Festival again this
weekend. We do a helluva Shabbat service there and I've had some amazing
surprise guests sit in with me: Last week was Billy Jonas, and I'm still
stunned. We sang "God Is In" together, recorded together and the best
compliment I got was someone asking how long we had been playing together.
(oh, about 2 hours.....)
Billy's at HN, and Kerrville is one of the reasons I can't make it there.
This week, Peter Yarrow will be sitting in with me, as well as David Amram.
David Broza is rumored, as well. I also get VIP/Performer status and
privileges, including complete access to backstage. The performer's shower
is the only hot one in camp. There are 5000 people in tents, pop-tops and
RV campers...singing...communing...truly enjoying all that folk music has to
offer. I tell my fellow "Kerrverts" (that's a play on the word "convert,"
not "pervert," that CAJE is a Jewish Kerrville, only we're in dorms.)
By the way, I penned the moniker "Kerrvertsteins" for the many, many Jews
who attend.
This is a phenomenal way that Jewish music has affected my life - who knows
when I would have the opportunity in a non-Jewish venue to play with these
amazing performers and legends? We get 200 people the Threadgill outdoor
theatre for this service (we had 125 last week) and the best part are the
disenfranchised Jews who come up to us afterwards, crying, laughing,
dancing. They say things like: "I never knew services could be like this."
That's what it's all about - connections with fellow Jews no matter where
you are.
Both Abby Gostein and Amy Adler from this list have joined me at Kerrville
in the past and can also attest to it's magic. Thanks for opening it up,
Adrian!
