Here's one other related thought to the choir in the aisle...
At Temple Society of Concord we have just held the second very successful
Shirat Shabbat service - something akin to Craig's Friday Night Live. What
helped to make it successful was that our 30+ member volunteer choir learned
the music and then spread themselves throughout the sanctuary pews for the
service. This offered an alternative to the choir sitting up front and
singing while many of the congregants "watched the performance." Everyone
sang throughout the service; and all were energized by it.
We do "feature" our choir "up front" in other special services, but when we
do, we have never seen this level of involvement.
Just a suggestion of something else to try...
