Hi John,
Sounds like you know more than you think you know about song leading. Don't
feel bad about the session with mixed ages not going well. I think we could
all swap horror stories about our first song leading or music teaching
experiences! Furthermore, an event not well organized will throw water on
even the most experienced song leader. My advice is to try to find a job
song leading in a Hebrew school, pre-school or camp, come in with the
confidence that you know some great material and learn on the job. If
volunteering is the only way to get started, you will most likely find that
you will be hired soon enough. People with your skills and repertoire are
not easy to come by. Talk to other song leaders about techniques for
getting and keeping the kids' attention. Don't get down on yourself when a
class goes awry. Just learn and correct.
I think you would learn a lot from HN and have a great time too.
