For Thanksgiving with very young children, I sing Peter and Ellen Allard's
"Count Your Blessings," Debbie Friedman's lighthearted "Happy Thanksgiving"
(hurray, hurray, hurray, aren't you glad you're not a turkey on this
Thanksgiving Day) and Karen Daniel's "Sing A Song About A Rainbow" (with
special lyrics she wrote about giving thanks). In each of those songs,
there's a refrain that children can join in on. Each one expresses Jewish
values although the songs are appropriate in nonJewish settings as well. I
do Doug Cotler's "Thank You God" all year, including at Thanksgiving. With
older children, I do my "We Give You Thanks" round, which is based on modim
anachnu and was performed at an interfaith service.
