Ethan and anyone else doing children's music for Sukkot, here are a few
suggestions:
"Hasukah Ma Yafah" is a nice, traditional and singable song.
In addition, this fun suggestion came to me last year on the list from Karen
or Judith or someone else (sorry that I forget).
To the Calypso tune of "Shake Sonora"
Shake, shake shake your Lulav
Shake it all the time (2x)
It's a good one to place in the middle of your concert when you want the
kids to have a stretch. It is also conducive to using small rhythm
instruments. Have them sing and dance to different movements, sing it
softly, loudly, just girls, just boys, etc.
Add any songs about stars "Twinkle Twinkle", "Starlight Starbright" or the
spiritual "Great Big Stars Way up Yonder" and substituting the word kochavim
(stars) whenever possible. Any children's songs you may know about fruits
and vegetables or farming could also tie in e.g. Raffi's "I Like to Eat
Apples and Bananas" and the songs "Aikendrum", "Oats, Peas, Beans and Barley
Grow" and "Garden Song" ("Inch by inch, row by row I'm gonna make this
garden grow"). The children's song "Going on a Picnic" could be changed to
"Going to the Sukkah".
Judith Kaplan Ginsburgh has a number of good holiday children's songs in her
publication. There is also a fine book by Rachel Buchman, published by Mel
Bay and a useful book called Apples and Other Days by Leah Abrams.
Have fun. This age group is great to sing for.
Rachelle
