[HANASHIR:6924] paid or not paid

Just a note regarding how much people are paid if at all for their cantorial or
songleading services ... Not every congregation can afford professional fees
and not every professional can find regular work in a congregation. I started
out doing this kind of performing as favours to friends for weddings, Bar
Mitzvahs, etc. and moved on to volunteering with small congregations and
organizations who were operating on a shoestring. After that I was fortunate
enough to find a congregation who needed my professional services on a regular
basis. But if I hadn't I am sure I would be still doing some volunteering
because of the reward of contributing musically to religious services. I think
most of us would agree volunteering is of the same real, if not monetary, value
as paid work.
