Hi,
One great way to get older kids invested into a song session is to give
them some
responsibility for leading. At this point in their religious school "careers"
they
probably know a lot of the material. Many of them have probably been to a UAHC
camp, and
if it was one of the better ones, they probably learned a number of good songs.
This is a
way to turn peer pressure around in your favour. As long as you pick the right
kids to
lead, the others just might have some respect for their peers in front of the
group.
One other way to get kids involved may be to bring small percussion
instruments like
shakers, small drums etc. Also, at this age kids may be getting into playing
more
conventional instruments more seriously. Last year I had grade six kids asking
me where
they could get the chords to the songs we sang so that they could go home and
learn to
play them on their guitars.
My two cents (Canadian, about 1.35 cents American),
Marc Levy
