[HANASHIR:6760] Re: K-6 sunday school music

Judy, I think you are 100% right. I remember something Debbie Freidman told
me once in my early songleading days at Oconomowoc. She said that when it
came to this question of singing secular music at retreats (but it applies to
Sunday School maybe even more) there are plenty of clubs, organizations or
activities that present opportunities to sing secular music. Boys and Girls
Scouts have overnights, campfires. YMCA's, school orchestra, school choirs,
garage bands...etc etc. Our job is to be the "Jewish content providers." We
all know how magical group singing can be. I do sing secular music and I
know it can also be very spiritual, it can often create that magic...it's
just not Jewish. So if we are going to be the "providers" of that intense
spirituality that can come from singing in a group, that happens to be in a
Jewish setting... Debbie said we must make that spiritual experiece a Jewish
one.
Happy to be an agreeable guy...Regards and Good Shabbos, Bruce Herst
