[HANASHIR:6049] Re: Headpiece microphone

Susan,
I'm responding to the whole list because it might be of interest to others.

Like Judy, I have reservations about the "telephone operator" microphone,
for two reasons.

One is looks. Judy said it: Garth Brooks. And Garth doesn't have much
hair to mess up with a strap on his head!

The other reason: You'd better have a very good soundperson.

With a stationary mic, the singer controls the sound by moving her head.
Want a bassier sound? Eat the mic and don't move as much air. Want to cut
down on the "P" pops? Sing across the mic head instead of right at it.
Want to hit a loud high note? Increase your distance.

With a mic that is always the same (short) distance from your mouth, you
don't have these options. You'd better have a good soundperson.

That having been said, go to your local big music store and try some of
these mics out. Don't let a committee choose one for you, and don't settle
for cheap. Condensor microphones generally give better sound than dynamic
ones, but condensor mics need phantom power (read: battery pack).
Presumably you'll also need a battery-powered transmitter. Some of the
better microphone companies are AKG, Audio-Technica, Electrovoice, Rode,
and Shure.

Good luck. Will we see at Hava Nashira?
