Dear Friends,
While hating to be a fuddy-duddy about it, whenever a sheet of
music or recording is sold the user needs to have permission from the
copyright holder. The key word is sold. Even though you personally are
not profitting from the sale, the congregation is. As far as a
copyright holder is concerned, that means he/she deserves consideration.
Getting permission, however, does not always mean that a fee must be
paid. If you know the composer(s) personally, then contact them
directly. If not, you need to contact the Harry Fox Agency, Inc. They
can be reached at:
711 Third Avenue New York, NY 10017
(212) 370-5330
If you do not go through the proper channels, the congregation
risks a visit from the government and stiff fines. The same is true for
photocopied music (even when used for educational purposes).
Good luck with your project.
