[HANASHIR:5825] Re: Passover Songsheet - April 2000

Dear All,

Peter and I just got back from a most wonderful trip to Birmingham,
Alambama, Steve Dropkin's hometown. We performed a family concert at the
Levite JCC. We definitely experienced Southern hospitality at its best! We
were made to feel so welcome. Steve and his wife, Jessica (a cantor at the
reform synagogue) are contributing so much to the Jewish community and have
clearly, in a short time (they've been there less than a year) made a huge
impact. Congratulations to them for all they have done and many thanks for
the warm reception!

I led the music at our local Worcester NCJW women's seder on April 11th. I
added this next twist to the seder and I thought it was LOTS of fun. I'll
explain as best I can and if you have any questions, please feel free to
email me privately. Each time we came to a new part in the order of the
seder, we sang the order of the seder, from start to finish, using a
different melody. I tried to choose a melody that could in some way reflect
the next part of the seder about which we were singing. For example, when we
got to karpas, we sang the order of the seder using the song "Take Me Out to
the Ballgame"....last year, we sang "Simple Gifts" from Aaron Copland's
Applachian Spring. If there was leftover melody at the end of the parts of
the seder, we just either stopped or sang the rest of the melody on "la la
la". Hope that makes sense. In any case, it was really fun. Some people who
thought it was a little hokey actually told me they warmed up to the idea
and they liked the fact that it helped them learn the order of the seder.
BTW, this was not my idea. I saw it done at last years' second night seder
at my friend, Rabbi Judy Kummer's house in Needham, MA.

Chag Sameach to all!

Fondly, Ellen Allard
