[HANASHIR:5805] Re: HANASHIR digest 858

A response to the following queries:

<< B'rich rachamanya, malka di'anya, malka d'hai pita (x2)
You are the Source of life for all there is, and Your blessings flow
 through me. (x2)

Can you help with the following questions!

 (a) What language is this in?
 (b) Who wrote it?
 (c) Are the transliterated words spelled correctly?
 (d) What is the exact word-for-word translation?
 (e) Is the English correct - in particular "for all there is"; and is
it "Your blessings flow" or "Your blessing flows"? >>

a) It is in Aramaic
b) The original is from Talmud; the correct way to "bench" when the "listim"
(criminal types) are out to get you ...... (derekh agav, rent "The Frisco
Kid" ... )
c) just one actual error, the rest can be transliterated according to your
system ... it's malka di'ALMA ; plus on repetition, there is no second malka,
it's MAREY
d) Barukh HArahaman / blessed be the compassionate one; malka di'ALMA /
melkeh ha'olam; marey d'hay pita / master of this bread.
e) should be "for all THAT is" and it is most emphatically one "blessing
flows"
acording to the chant's composer, Rabbi Shefa Gold. It is well known and
commonly used in Jewish Renewal communities, some Reconstructionist
congregations, and I would imagine, more broadly, via Shefa's peripatetic
teaching.

Leshalom,
Rabbi Elizabeth Bolton
