I don't suppose this will actually be helpful to anyone, but I thought I'd
share anyway.
This may be a little weird, but I never -- and I mean never -- break strings.
OK, once when I was crinching my High E, I crinched too hard and broke it at
the bridge. But never on stage, never leading songs. (I should spit or
something now. Or say something in Yiddish.) I'm not sure why, but here's a
theory: I never use a pick. I have always used my nails. I take gelatin
capsules every day. Yes, it's a problem when a nail breaks (You should see
people's faces when I, being male, yell out "Damn, I broke a nail!") but I've
learned to deal with it. I do play hard, I get enough volume, I like the way
it sounds, and I like the versatility it affords me with my hands. I can go
from strumming to picking, and It's one less thing I have to worry about
losing.
As I said earlier, much about playing the guitar is personal choice and what
you're comfortable with. Me, I've never taken any guitar lessons, so I guess
I just developed my own style, like any guitar player should do.
Looking forward to seeing many of you at HN.
