Bruce,
My point is that, regardless of WHAT the custom is, it becomes tradition.
If you had only attended services at a Reform synagogue and then went to a
Conservative synagogue one day, you would be quite surprised when not
everybody stood to recite Mourner's Kaddish, because in Reform TRADITION
everyone does so (and, I might add, some Reform rabbis are quite insistent
about it, no less than an Orthodox rabbi would insist on head covering).
This is why I'm always a little hesitant to say "in traditional Judaism" -
all variants are traditional!
I didn't really want to make ANY observation on the relative merits of any
tradition.
