Janeen,
Offensive? Is it the constant drunkenness, the sex, the sexistness (?), the intrigue, the bloody conclusion, or the absence of God (God's name, actually)? Many of our sages were offended too; that's why the book didn't make it into the TaNaCh.
The point is: Your're offended? GOOD! You're supposed to be offended. You're supposed to get drunk. You're supposed to make noise and act a little outrageous. The Purim story is of a world turned on its head. It's the opposite in time and tone to Yom KiPURIM. And a famous rabbi (sorry, can't remember the name) opined that, when Moshiach comes, the only holiday which we will still need to observe will be Purim.
The very idea of a "politically correct" megillat Esther offends me.
Yes, but how do I REALLY feel?
Good luck.
Andy

a question ... several of our congregants have expressed concern re: megillat ester. When it's read in English ... according to some ... it is quite offensive. When it's read in Hebrew few understand it. It is our custom to read it in English ... what I've been sent on a mission for is a "contemporary" translation of esther. Any ideas out there?
thanks
